At just 17-year-old, Ayomide Bello will become the first female Nigerian canoeist to compete at the Olympic games when they head to Tokyo in 2020.

BBC reports that, last week, she beat other African canoeists at the qualifiers in Morocco to win the C1 200 meters event. As she’s known to do, she also competed in the C2 women’s final with a partner, Goodness Foloki – and, as you might expect, they both won gold.

This isn’t the first time the Osun-born canoeist is doing the country proud. Just seven months ago, she won Nigeria’s first gold medal at an international water sports event after beating a fleet of opponents at the Open International Canoe Sprint Competition in India. Ayomide also competed at the Youth Olympics in Argentina in 2018.

We are rooting for her to bring home the gold.
