For football lovers, Saturdays are days of bliss, as fans’ favourite clubs line up to struggle for their own share of points for the week. However, the happiness of football fans was in a state of comatose until recently that the top football leagues around the world resumed.

The English Premier League (EPL), resumed three weeks ago, La Liga last week and Serie A, this past weekend.

Given Frank Lampard’s never-seen-before passion for working with academy boys, pundits have wondered how Chelsea would break through to a competitive top four, with Solksjaer’s Manchester united beating the Blues 4 goals to nothing at Old Trafford in the team’s opening game of the EPL.

Now, the muddied waters seem to be clearer for the British Gaffer, as his academy boys, Mason Mount, and Tammy Abraham came in clutch to give him his first victory as an EPL coach, in a 2: 3 thriller at Norwich.

Lampard who has spent his youth in Cobhams, under at least 10 managers, as an attacking midfielder was employed to manage Chelsea through its transfer ban, a crisis that would have likely crippled many other teams.

Because of Chelsea’s healthy academy policies and platform, the club could easily turn to its loanees for salvation, with Hudson Odoi, Loftus Cheek, Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori and Reece James all getting a call-up to the first team.

Downtown Manchester United may not say the same after enlisting the services of their 1999 poacher, Ole Solskjaer, often dubbed the Norwegian assassin for his coldness in front of goal.

However, the results have not been anything close to what it was when Ole played under the great Alex Ferguson, as the Red Devils struggled, match after match, not minding a team comprising of young talents like Paul Pogba and David De Gea, the Spanish number one stopper.

While fighting racist attacks on some of their players over missed penalty kicks over the week, starting with Pogba and now Rashford, the team keeps hope alive, with their 4 out of 9 points.

With a 2:1 loss at London to Crystal Palace, the Norwegian gaffer may have to look to the drawing board, seeing that the same Chelsea the Manchester United fans taunt has now caught up with them in points.

That may not be the same for the Merseyside team, Liverpool as it stretches its unbeaten 3-match run, another week in a seemingly 3:1 heartless lampooning of the London side, Arsenal.

Not minding that Arsenal had made some bold signings with their 45 million pound budget, including the former Chelsea defender, David Luiz, who left in controversial circumstances.

Unai Emery, the Turkish Manager of the team, also welcomed the Ivorian Star, Nicholas Pepe, alongside Santiago Bernabeu’s loanee, Cebalos. With an addition across defense, attack, and midfield, the London side was supposed to put up a fight against the current European Champions, but it seemed like the latter, had a field run.

As the English premier League proceeds, under the tortuous eyes of VAR, the controversial video assistant referee helping to make big decisions in matches, more intrigues are to be expected.

The title race is clearly open with Manchester City, a contender irking out a three-pointer over the weekend, as it visited Bournemouth. This result places the current EPL champions within 2 points of the current European Champions, Liverpool.

The current EPL champions took a draw in London against Tottenham Hotspur, last week, landing them in a total of 4 points, as the league leaders, Liverpool continued their blazing run with 3 out of 3 victories, making it a perfect run, yet.

Harry Kane and Pocchetinho’s Hotspur, could not get away with a draw as they succumbed to the defensive and counter-attacking play of Shelvey’s Newcastle, on Sunday. Joelinton’s 27th minute goal was the difference as the referee drew the curtains on the game.

As intriguing as it is, one may not cry forever, as just last two weeks, Pogba and Aubameyang were smiling, while Lampard and his academy boys took a beating in the Old Trafford. Today, what changed?

The game may just be the game.
